RADIO NEW ZEALAND: The National Party is under pressure to adopt another Government policy after key players in the farm sector signed up to the Fast Forward fund.
When the fund was announced earlier in the year, National said it would scrap it but organisations ranging from dairy giant Fonterra to kiwifruit exporter Zespri are calling for the fund to be retained.
The Government is putting $700 million into the fund to pay for food industry research and the farming industry is committing a similar amount over the next 10 to 15 years.
On Thursday, a number of the key organisations in the industry officially signed on.
David Pilkington, a director on Zespri's board, says with so many industry bodies backing the fund he does not believe a change of government will make any difference.
Other industry figures say they hope National will not scrap the fund if it leads the next government.
