Call for minimum wage to increase

RADIO NEW ZEALAND: The Council of Trade Unions has released its election policy, calling for the minimum wage to be lifted to two-thirds of the average, or $15 an hour.

The CTU, which is listed as a third party under electoral law, says an economic recession is no barrier to a lift in the minimum wage.

Other aspects of the policy released on 5 October include providing more training and development for workers and increasing the number of paid weeks' leave for parents from 14 to 26.

Council of Trade Unions president Helen Kelly says low wages are not necessarily linked to low profit.

She says some of New Zealand's more profitable industries, such as aged care, fast foods and banks, are paying the lowest wages of all.

Under the Electoral Finance Act, anyone other than a registered party or candidate who wants to spend more than $12,000 on an election campaign must be listed as a third party. They cannot spend more than $120,000, and must file an election expense return.
