YouTube and TVNZ partners for election debate

STUFF.CO.NZ: Prime Minister Helen Clark and National's leader John Key will answer questions put to them through online video site YouTube when they go head-to-head in the first TV campaign debate.

TVNZ and YouTube announced the deal today, saying it was "a history-making initiative".

The event, scheduled for October 14, is now called the One News YouTube Election Debate.

From today YouTube users can submit their questions. A selection will then appear on YouTube and its users will vote for their favourites.

The leaders' responses will be broadcast live on the night.

The debate will be fronted by TVNZ's Mark Sainsbury with three political journalists asking questions as well.
